On Saturday August 25, 10 AM - Douglas Knudson will lead us to San Antonio Mountain (Cerro de San Antonio). We will follow a route west of the mountain which was used for thousands of years of travel. Discussions will be held by Suzanne Colville Off of historians Helen Blumenschein and Ruth Marie Colville who gathered historic data and impressions of this area for many years and by historian Knudsen of these travelers.
Directions for Colorado drivers: (New Mexicans are welcome.) The turnoff of US 285 is 21 miles and approximately 35 minutes south of Antonito, CO. Turn West on rural road 418, a gravel road going westerly. Go a short distance (about 120 yards) to a pull-out. We will wait there until 10 am. High clearance vehicle is necessary.
If the weather is good (usually) plan on bringing sandwiches and liquids. If weather is unbearable, we may retreat to an Antonito restaurant. Bring plenty of water, etc. Preparation: La Vereda A Trail Through Timeby Ruth Marie Colville (1995).
