The Rio Grande County Museum is one block south of the traffic light at the intersection of U.S. Highway 160 and Colorado Highway 112 (from Center, Colorado).  Parking is available along two sides of the museum.  Museum hours are 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Permanent exhibits include a variety of clothing, tools, quilts and other paraphernalia associated with the San Luis Valley's rural western character.  An innovative exhibit composed of Paul Mohoney photographs, emphasizes the importance of water to San Luis Valley citizens.  A special exhibit of  San Luis Valley Native American rock art and artifacts culminates years of cooperative effort among people of various backgrounds.  Sled runners from John C. Frémont's disastrous 4th expedition into the San Juan Mountains the winter of 1848-49 enhance another permanent exhibit featuring photos of timberline campsites and descriptive text from diaries kept by expedition members.

Rio Grande County Museum takes an active role in promoting a broad perspective of San Luis Valley heritage by hosting special events such as lectures and demonstrations.  The museum gift shop keeps a variety of items relating to  exhibits and other topics of interest to San Luis Valley visitors.  Local historians and Southwest authors  are well represented in the museum's book store.
